Apologies if your children left school feeling a little bit queasy yesterday – for Science we recreated what happens to food in the body using digestives, bananas, ziplock bags, orange juice, water and a pop sock.
First, our hands did the job of the teeth and ground the food into small pieces and used a ziplock bag to represent the stomach.
Next, we added orange juice and water to mimic stomach acids and churned the concoction.
After that, the mixture was poured into the 'small intestine (pop sock) to show how the nutrients are removed through the lining and absorbed into the blood stream.
Then, we squeezed the liquid out of what remained to mimic the events in the large intestine.
Finally, we made a hole in the pop sock to squeeze out the waste product – this step speaks for itself!
