Our Local MP visits Burleigh

On Friday 18th October, Lewis Cocking, our new local MP, came to our school to talk to the newly elected Burleigh Parliament. During his visit, he told us all about his job; here is some of the information that we found out:

  • In the House of Commons, you can’t speak unless you have a seat in the Chamber. If you do have a seat, it is the job of the Speaker to decide which MP speaks next
  • The Chamber can become very cramped
  • Democracy is a very important part of Parliament
  • Lewis’ nan inspired him to become an MP as she was very active in her local community
  • When he was younger, Lewis worked in the Hoddesdon branch of Sainsbury’s
  • One thing that Lewis would like to change in Broxbourne is the amount of roadworks, also he would like them to be completed more quickly.

After the meeting, the Burleigh Parliament have all been inspired to make our school the best it can be.
