    Email re new food policy

Email sent Friday 9th January 2026

    Dear Parents,

Welcome back to a new term at Burleigh School.  We hope that you and your child had a good first week?

Attached is the final version of our new ‘Food Policy’; a draft version of which was sent out just before Christmas.  Thank you to all those parents who contributed to the process.  In response to the comments we received, two additional short sections have been added.  The first relates to Breakfast Club and reads as follows:

‘NB We are currently in the process of revising our existing Breakfast Club menu to ensure pupils can choose from an even wider range of healthy products, all of which will promote sustained energy and better concentration for learning.  Our new ‘MAGIC Menu’ will be launched in March 2026.’

The second relates to the support pupils receive when struggling to eat their meal at lunchtime:

‘Typically, children are given a full half hour in which to eat their meal.  Midday Supervisory Assistants (MSAs) monitor the quantity of food being eaten by each child.  When a pupil is not eating a sufficient amount, the MSA assigned to their class / year group will inform the child’s class teacher who will in turn inform their parent at the end of the school day.’

Packed Lunches: If you are providing your child with a packed lunch from home, please see the section entitled: ‘Recommended Lunch Items’.  This gives clear support as to which foods to include and which foods not to include in your child’s packed lunch.

Thank you for your support and involvement in this very important area of school life.

    Yours sincerely,

    Mr Norman

    Email re smartphone free childhood

Email sent on Thursday 15th January 2026

    Dear Parents,

The debate around children, smartphones and social media is moving quickly.  Sir Keir Starmer is now considering an Australian-style age limit on social media.  MPs are currently debating the issue.  If you would like to share your views with our local MP and influence what he says, please click on the following link – it’s quick and easy:

Email your MP about raising the social media age to 16

Similarly, several Burleigh parents now receive regular newsletters from ‘Smartphone Free Childhood’.  If you would like to find out more about this movement, click on the link below:

    Email re blindman's Lane

Email sent on Thursday 22nd January 2026

    Dear Parents,

I am writing to share with you an update regarding the accident outside Burleigh Primary School yesterday afternoon. Several of you expressed concern last night and this morning about the welfare of our crossing patrol supervisor. I have just spoken to her and passed on your thoughts and good wishes which were greatly appreciated. Thank you, too, to everyone at the scene yesterday for your calm and caring response to the situation.

Having written already to Broxbourne Council regarding the congestion on Blindman’s Lane, I have written yet again to ask for further consideration and action regarding our situation at drop-off and collection times. If you would also like to write to the local council to express your concerns and add weight to my correspondence, please email parkingcontrol@broxbourne.gov.uk

    Yours sincerely,

    Mr Norman

    Letter re Breakfast Club menu

Letter sent on Monday 26th January 2026

    Dear Parents,

As outlined in our new Food Policy, we are currently in the process of revising our Breakfast Club menu to ensure pupils can choose from a wider range of healthy products, all of which will promote sustained energy and better concentration for learning.

As a result, we have already begun to phase in healthier products.  A good range of cereals will remain, including Weetabix, Cornflakes (low-sugar version) and Rice Snaps (low-sugar version).  Porridge and Shredded Wheat will be on offer soon.  One new option which is proving very popular includes a bowl of natural yoghurt with fruit and a drizzle of honey.  In addition to this, a range of fruit is now placed on each table.  From tomorrow onwards, the children will be able to order beans on toast.  Egg on toast is coming soon.

Our new ‘MAGIC Menu’ will be fully launched at the end of February 2026.

    Yours sincerely,

    Mr Norman
