Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND)
The SEND Code of Practice: 0 to 25 years (2014) states that a child or young person has a special educational need if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for him or her. A child of compulsory school age or a young person has a learning difficulty or disability if he or she:
- has a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age, or
- has a disability which prevents or hinders him or her from making use of facilities of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream schools or mainstream post-16 institutions.
At Burleigh Primary School, we embrace the fact that every child is different, therefore the educational needs of every child will be different. This is certainly the case for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.
Our Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo) is Mrs Jenni Collins. She is responsible for co-ordinating provision for children on the SEND Register and also supports staff and parents.

Autism and ADHD
The Autism and ADHD transformation programme, which includes Hertfordshire County Council, NHS trusts, HPCI and local voluntary organisations, has been working hard to improve services for families and young people.
A key area of work has been ensuring you know where you can go to access support in your local area. This will hopefully help you get access to support as early as you can.

Nurture Groups at Burleigh
Our Nurture Room has been designed to be warm and welcoming and provide a consistent, predictable and safe place for children to learn.
Each Nurture group is a small group of no more than six pupils and is run by an experienced member of staff qualified in ‘The Theory and Practice of Nurture Groups’. At Burleigh, Nurture Groups are usually run in Years 2, 3 or 4.
The children follow a structure and routine within each session that includes group listening and speaking, shared playing and social skills. The group runs on consistency, positive reinforcement and praise. At the end of each programme, the children are presented with a special book in assembly to celebrate their achievements.
