    SMSC stands for: Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development

    Spiritual development: Children explore beliefs and experience; respect faiths, feelings and values; enjoy developing their understanding of themselves, others and the surrounding world; use imagination and creativity; reflect.

    Moral development: Children learn to recognise right and wrong; respect the law; understand consequences; investigate moral and ethical issues; offer reasoned views.

    Social development: Children investigate moral issues; appreciate diverse viewpoints; participate, volunteer and cooperate; resolve conflict; engage with the 'British Values' of democracy, the rule of law, liberty, respect and tolerance.

    Cultural development: Children learn to appreciate cultural influences; appreciate the role of Britain's parliamentary system; participate in cultural opportunities; understand, accept, respect and celebrate diversity.

    Jigsaw at Burleigh

    In our PSHE lessons, we follow a scheme called 'Jigsaw' which aims to build and sustain a positive, emotionally literate, happy community which enables learning.

    Jigsaw is a whole-school programme of lesson plans, teaching resources, music, assemblies and more that is underpinned by a mindfulness philosophy and practice, aiming to give children the awareness to observe their thoughts, feelings and context in order to be empowered to make choices. This enables the management of emotional states and builds resilience and self-esteem.

    Growth Mindset

    At Burleigh Primary School, we know that pupils who have a positive attitude towards their learning will make good progress and be successful. Consequently, instilling all our pupils with 'growth mindsets' is a key priority for the school.

    We want all our pupils to relish challenges, embrace their mistakes as part of the learning process, value the importance of effort, respond carefully to feedback and take inspiration from others. This will help them to achieve, not only with us, but also in their future lives as adults.

    We are very excited about the prospect of nurturing a growth mindset culture at Burleigh Primary School.

    Encouraging children to become confident and resilient learners

    Learn, explore and grow together. This is what we embed in all of our pupils here at Burleigh Primary School. We know that in order to fulfil the potential of our pupils and encourage them to become confident and resilient learners, we, as a team of parents and staff, need to model the mindset of a learner who is not afraid of making mistakes but who thrives upon them, knowing that this is all part of the learning process. The way in which we encourage children to learn and explore is vital to their success, not only at school but at home as well.
