British Values

Democracy

Pupils at Burleigh have the opportunity to have their voices heard through our elected School Council and our very own Burleigh Parliament. We encourage discussion and debate within both these groups as well as whole class circle time. Our pupils are encouraged to have an input into how school life is run this helps to instil an understanding of democracy for their future.

The Rule of Law

At Burleigh, pupils are encouraged to follow the class rules that they helped to create, and value the reasons behind the laws, whether they govern the class, the school or the country, they are essential for everyone's well-being and safety.

Individual Liberty

Alongside rules and laws we promote freedom of choice and the right to respectfully express our views and beliefs as an integral part of what it is to be British. Children may choose to take part in a range of extra-curricular activities. They have a very broad choice of lunchtime play areas and activities. They are involved in their own learning and respond to their learning by feedback systems and self- review of marking. They are taught how to use their choices and freedoms in a safe environment and though our curriculum areas such as e-safety, anti-bullying, sex and relationship education and drugs awareness education. We recently elected the School Parliament, all children had the right to vote for who they wanted to be our First Minister.

Mutual Respect

Mutual respect means treating other people with dignity and recognising their value. It's a feeling of deep admiration for other people and their unique qualities

Tolerance of these Faiths and Beliefs

At Burleigh Primary School we embrace diversity by ensuring all pupils develop an understanding and appreciation of cultures and beliefs different to their own.

Within our school we have two specialist teaching staff who enhance the learning and social/emotional needs of our EAL community.

We have recently hosted informal coffee afternoons to allow the parents of our EAL children to discuss their child's educational needs at Burleigh.

Feedback: Parents told us that they would like more home school information to be translated into their own language.

In response: We have now added an additional tab that allows parents to translate at the click of a button.

The table below shows how diverse our school community is.
