Welcome to Year 5!
This year in Year 5 we have lot of exciting things to look forward to!
In the first part of the Autumn Term, we will be writing ‘Stories from other cultures’ focusing on myths and legends. Beowulf will be the main text that we will use to help the children to write their own myths. We will then be writing ‘Non-chronological reports’ on the Egyptian pharaoh, Tutankhamen. In the second half of the Autumn Term we will be writing persuasive letters linked to ‘Extreme Earth’ and deforestation. Then we will be writing an explanation text linked to the book ‘How To Be A World Explorer: Your all-terrain training manual.’
Throughout the term we will be learning about place value, including decimal and negative numbers, in our maths lessons. We will cover rounding, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division as well as fractions. In addition, we will be continuing with Turbo Tables and Mental Maths tests.
Our first topic will be ‘Ancient Egyptians’. This will be taught through subjects such as History, English and Art. Our second topic this term is ‘Extreme Earth’ where we will be looking at extreme weathers and natural disasters.
For Science, the first unit of work will be on properties and changes of materials. After half term, we will be learning about forces.
We look forward to getting stuck into all of our new exhilarating topics and having a brilliant first term in Year 5!
Mr Hau, Miss Fox and all the Year 5 team.
